Afternoon Run in the Rain

The forecast said it was just going to be misty, so I figured I’d be safe to go for an afternoon run with the boys in the double stroller.  Of course, it started to sprinkle.  I had all my running gear on, the kids were in the stroller with their snacks, and I turned to them and said “It’s RAINing.”

Will must have heard the defeat in my voice because he gave me the big eyes, almost chin quiver, little voice “but we were going for a run, I thought…”

Out came the L.L. Bean rain jackets.  Will’s and Andrew’s on each of them, and mine covering their laps to keep them dry.

It mostly sprinkled, until the last quarter mile when it started to legitimately rain.  Even then, they were happy and dry except their hands and faces!  Neither seemed to mind a little rain on their cheeks, especially since it’s warm out. (Almost seventy degrees.)

Tips on running with kids in the rain:

  • It’s probably best to go when it’s just drizzle, and not too windy
  • Don’t go if it’s also really cold, or know your kids and their outdoor gear before you decide
  • Put them in rain gear!
  • Keep it short – we went for 3.25 miles and that was perfect for them
  • Consider a loop run close to home that you could cut short if you needed to
  • Make sure they’re warm enough, especially if you don’t have a rain canopy to keep rain and wind off their faces
  • Wipe your stroller down when you get home so it doesn’t rust
  • Run a route where you could pull in to a store or sheltered area if you really needed to
  • Keep checking on them to make sure they’re doing all right
My boys loved it!
Ready to head out!

After our run: Andrew looks cozy but concerned…

There’s the smile!
